This type of massage uses a variety of pressures and techniques, such as trigger point therapy, to achieve reduced pain and improved mobility. It is a useful adjunct to a well-rounded care plan that also includes exercise therapy and other self-management strategies.
As the name suggests, a deep tissue massage uses firm pressure to treat the deeper layers of muscle and fascia. Trigger point therapy uses sustained pressure on known and predictable areas of tension to produce a relaxation effect. This type of therapy can often cause some discomfort and post-treatment soreness; however, it should not be painful.
